After much digging, I found a gem, not a British comedy gem, but a British mystery gem. So close enough. The intro music is great, the print is clear, the characters are engaging, and the plot keeps you guessing. So what is it? It's Girl in the Headlines and I liked it so much I have to watch it again. It's a really solid film! Finally I found a good Brit film, but the search for a good british comedy that I've never seen before still continues. In the meantime, watch Girl in the Headlines here...

Midnight with Claudette Colbert and Don Ameche is one of my all time favorite movies. She runs of to Paris by herself. Mets Don Ameche in a taxi. Crashes a party full of rich people. Pretends to be rich. Don Ameche tries to blow her cover. It's a cinderella story. But who knew she saved up money to go to Paris by herself and Melvyn Douglas ( whose acting I can't stand) and Robert Young is in it. Actually, this is the first film I like Melvyn Douglas in. It's no Midnight, but it's very watchable.
Now that I've been sidetracked back to noir, I've been thinkig which Burt Lancaster do I like better? The confident, acid, Burt in Sweet Smell of Success? Match me. Or the brooding Lancaster in Criss Cross After much thought, it has to be brooding Burt. He excels in Sweet Smell of Success, but he does much better on film for me when he's running from trouble. I finally found the title of the film I was searching for Girl in the Headlines. The reviews say its not quite Agatha Cristie, so we will see. I'm determined to watch this, but since I remembered Quicksand, I've fallen back into Noirland. While searching for a British comedy gems, I remembered Mickey Rooney in Quicksand. It's one of his best films ever and it's a film noir. It takes his boyish charm and it works. Mickey Rooney wants to go out with a girl who is older but he doesn't have any money. So he "borrows" aka steals 20.00 out of the cash register and boy does it go down hill from there. To add to that the girl he takes out has Peter Lorre for an ex-boyfriend. The only drawback is he's not on the screen enough. You even get to see Mickey Rooney rob a man. It's one of the best B-noirs and he really acts in this one. Must see. P.S. The search continues for Brit films... |
